I had the best sushi the last time that I was in Boston. My friends took me to a restaurant called Douzo in the Back Bay section of Boston. For those of you who don’t know Boston, that’s the Boston equivalent of Beverly Hills. It’s where the very rich Bostonians live. Their families have been in the city for years. Just recently a parking space in the area sold for about $500,000. Yes a parking space. It’s within walking distance of the theater district. We were going to see a play that night, so it was the perfect spot. Living in Maine town of about 3,500 people, I don’t get a chance to eat much authentic sushi, so I was very excited.
I also don’t get to dress up very often and go to trendy and chic restaurants, so I adored this one. If you love the television show Sex and the City, this is the kind of place that Carrie Bradshaw would find to eat in. My friends and I sat at the bar so we could watch the Japanese chefs work. Seafood is a Boston tradition, so I ate a Spicy Tuna on rice. It was so fresh. The tuna just melted in my mouth while I saved the hot but not overwhelming spices. But you know it’s the rice in these places that always gets my attention.
Because we get such fresh seafood on the Maine coast, I have always wanted to make my own sushi. But my rice is pathetic. That’s about the nicest thing I could say about it. It’s either dry or watery and usually not very fluffy. I have invested in very high-quality pots and pans so that’s not the problem. As were were sitting at the Douzo Sushi Bar, I started talking to some of the servers and other guests. To my utter amazement, I found out that I’ve been going about rice all wrong. These people who make their own sushi, they use a rice cooker! They said it makes restaurant quality rice without every failing. I guess even people in Japan use these. So it’s not a failing on my part. I just ordered mine from Amazon. I can’t wait for it to arrive.
